thrift flip sweater vest
I've always wanted to try unravelling thrifted garments to reuse the yarn. In January, I found these sweaters:

The red one was a failure (always check the seam construction to make sure it's joined with chains and not sewn together) but the greige sweater will be ripped apart and reborn! Bro who started as an odd mass-produced piece will be reborn as a versatile vest for my wardrobe.
I got it for $5.99 believe it was a wool blend, which explains why the fibers felted so badly. I would guess that it's somewhere around DK/worsted weight.
I began by unravelling and washing the yarn.

When preparing to make hanks, I noticed that the noodle crinkle remained after washing, so I straightened the bundles with a clothing steamer.

now deciding on a pattern... finding a project that had the right yarn weight and yardage was challenging. I had Svetlana Kochkina's Simple Cozy Vest saved on ravelry for a while and figured that I could find a workable gauge with my greige scraps. I used a 2.75mm crochet hook and had just enough yarn, but wished I could have made it looser for better drape. Unfortunately, the pattern does not have inclusive sizing, which I found pretty disappointing. While I understand the work and effort that goes into pattern-writing, I also wish that more designers had a greater variety of size options. While this vest pattern is very well-written, it's one-size only, said to fit "an adult female, medium size, 175-178 cm height". That's a very specific measurement that I don't even fit into myself
Still, I thought this was a good opportunity to gain experience in crocheting vest construction and I hope to someday be proficient enough to design my own pieces. Here are some process pics:

And the finished vest after blocking

yippeee!!!!
I will be working on my sewing skills and posting more thrift flips soon
